Gypsum Fall Festival set for Saturday

GYPSUM -- The Gypsum Fall Festival will be Saturday at various downtown locations.

Activities begin with a 9 a.m. fish pond, and an antique car and tractor display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tricycle races will be at 10 a.m.; bring your own tricycle.

Registration for the kids' pedal tractor pull is 10:30 a.m., with the pull beginning at 11 a.m. At noon is a paper plate drop with prizes for all ages, along with horse and mule soccer at the old school ball diamond.

The Southeast of Saline Jr.-Sr. High School Jazz Band will perform at 12:30 p.m. at the city auditorium, followed by the Christ Victory Youth ARC Group.

Afternoon events include a 1 p.m. eating contest, 2:30 parade, 3-4 voter registration and meet the candidates at the gazebo, and a 3:30 Texas hold 'em poker tournament at the Country Cafe.

A costume contest begins at 6:30 p.m. at the city auditorium, followed by an 8 p.m. performance from the Southeast of Saline Madrigals.

Senate candidates to appear on public TV

BUNKER HILL -- Candidates for the 24th District Kansas Senate seat will be featured on the next edition of Smoky Hills Public Television's "Kansas Candidates 2008," scheduled for 9 p.m. Thursday.

Candidates are Republican incumbent Pete Brungardt and his Democratic challenger, Abner Perney, both of Salina.

An encore presentation of the program is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.

Operation Lifesaver to be in Ellsworth

Kansas Operation Lifesaver volunteers and the Kansas Highway Patrol will be at the railroad crossing at Main and Douglas streets in Ellsworth on Thursday to promote railroad crossing safety.

Motorists will be stopped briefly and given railroad safety information and coupons from Sonic Drive-In.

The effort is to remind drivers about the danger at railroad crossings and on railroad right-of-way. Last year in Kansas, 14 people were killed and 26 injured in railroad crashes.

Operation Lifesaver is a national public education program designed to eliminate rail-related collisions, deaths and injuries.

Gardener to talk about herbs birds like

Melvin Epp, an avid gardener and president of the Wichita Organic Garden Club, will give a presentation to the Saline County Horticulture Club on Herbs to Attract Birds, Bees and Butterflies.

The presentation will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carver Center, 315 N. Second.

The meeting is open to the public.

Saline County to offer flu shot clinic

The Salina-Saline County Health Department will offer flu shots to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park.

Everyone 6 months of age and older is eligible for a shot. The cost is $22.

Persons with Medicare Part B, Medicaid, Children's Mercy, Unicare or Private Medicare Advantage Plan C should bring their cards, as the plans may cover the shots.

People wanting immunizations are asked to wear short sleeves.
