Machinists union confirms Boeing talks

SEATTLE -- The Machinists union has confirmed that negotiations to end a five-week strike at the Boeing Co. have begun.

A note saying talks with a federal mediator were under way was posted Sunday on the union's Web site. Spokeswoman Connie Kelliher said she did not know where the talks were being conducted.

Boeing and union spokesmen have said the two sides agreed to a media blackout on the negotiations.

An agreement to renew contract talks for the first time since the strike began Sept. 6 were announced Wednesday.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents about 27,000 hourly production workers in Washington, Oregon and Kansas. Key issues include job security, pay, retirement benefits and health care.

Oklahoma boy dies in crash near Wellsville

WELLSVILLE -- A 7-year-old Oklahoma boy was killed Saturday after a sport utility vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 35 near Wellsville.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol said the boy, identified as Alvin Lee Harrison III, of Beggs, Okla., was thrown from the vehicle.

The patrol said 28-year-old Ravin Harrison, of Del City, Okla., lost control of the SUV as she drove northbound on I-35.

Harrison was taken to a hospital in Overland Park. Two other children in the SUV -- an 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy -- were taken to a Kansas City, Mo., hospital. Their conditions were not released.

State fair may seek help with power bill

HUTCHINSON -- Kansas State Fair officials may ask the state for $200,000 to cover a potential doubling of its annual electric bill.

General Manager Denny Stoecklein said Thursday the annual fair in Hutchinson uses its peak energy during the September event fair. Through the other 11 months of the year, it uses only about a fourth of the peak.

Westar sets the fair's electric rate by its peak. Three years ago, the fair signed a capacity credit agreement with Westar that helped lower the cost. But Stoecklein said that agreement ends this fiscal year, and Westar has indicated it won't renew.
