Public can vote on new fair logo

By TIM UNRUH

Salina Journal

A new logo for the Tri-Rivers Fair has been narrowed to five finalists, and beginning today, the community can help choose the winner.

The 36-member Saline County Fair Association board narrowed the field from 56 entries. Anyone can vote for their favorite by going to www.tririversfair.org.

The winner, announced June 2, will receive $500 and serve as grand marshal of the Tri-Rivers Parade at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in downtown Salina. The fair is Aug. 6-10.

The fair is a public event, and the public should pick the logo, said Eric Blomquist, Assaria, fair board president.

"We wanted to allow the community to submit designs and then to vote on them, so they would have a little ownership in the fair," he said.

Entries were submitted from Mission Hills to Oakley, and picking the five finalists was not easy, Blomquist said.

"It was much tougher than any of us anticipated," he said. "We had some idea what we were looking for that represents everything all of the board members feel the fair represents."

The voting was anonymous. One person, who did not vote, assigned a number to every entry, and then board members gave a score from 1 to 5.

"We think we have a great event and we just want to bring it to more people's eyes," Blomquist said.

The fair's main function is to showcase the works of youngsters, he said.

"It's a culmination of a year's worth of projects, in some cases two years. 4-H is a great organization and has built a lot of leaders," he said. "We want the public to be aware of what these kids are working on."
